The Amityville Horror
The story of the Amityville house is considered one of the best known hoaxes. But who knows - did something really ever happen to the Lutzes to make them tell these stories? George and Kathy Lutz moved into the house at Amityville after its previous owners the DeFeo's were murdered by their son, Ronald DeFeo. In the early hours of the morning on November 13th, 1974, Ronald took a high powered rifle and murdered his parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Ronald DeFeo's excuses for murdering his family changed consistently, from him hearing voices to it being a Mafia hit to the older of his sisters. He was sentenced to six consecutive 25 year-to-life prison terms. The Lutzes moved in to the house in the summer of 1975. After living in the house for 10 days they suddenly abandoned all their possessions and moved out of their beloved new home. They soon went public and told of horrors that went on in their house that tormented them whilst living there. The stories they told included a demonic levitating pig, glowing red eyes that stared at them through the window, a pit into hell in the basement, oozing slime and blood from the walls, urges to repeat the murders that had happened in the house previously, infestations of flies, and waking up every night at the exact same time that the murders took place. The Amityville house is still standing. The new owners try their best to disguise the house from the tourists, but nothing will ever stop the tourists from wanting to have a look at the house.

Book Worm
The world of books is an imaginative, fantastic place, where the mind knows no boundaries. In an endeavor to share this experience with you, `Expressions' is including a literary column. For those of you who are unacquainted with the joy of reading, here is our recommendation of the quarter. As a kid the `Fudge' series by Judy Blume had me enthralled and the fact of the matter is that I still love it. This series has four books namely, `Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing', `Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great', `Super Fudge' and `Fudge-a-Mania'. These are about the crazy antics of a kid called Fudge, Farley Drexel Hatcher, who is constantly driving his older brother Peter up the wall. It makes for very enjoyable reading and is guaranteed to provide lots of laughs. The whole series is available at leading bookstalls. Go ahead, give it a try and let the magic of books cast it's spell over you!

Mama knows best Nandita Kannampilly & Ratna Gupta, 19yrs, St Xaviers College.
She's always around to tuck you into bed at night, to kiss your tears away, and to offer you the best advice when you least want it. Mama knows best. She always has, and that's precisely why we won't do as she says. When you're in a jam, mom's advice cuts right to the heart of the problem, but what's infuriating is that it is always the `right' thing to do. You can't really blame her for it though. She's learnt from her mistakes and she's only trying to help. What she doesn't realize is that we have to learn from our own experiences, just as she did. Mama, your words of wisdom are really hard to follow. After all practicality and rationality tend to elude us at most times. The realization that we will definitely regret this decision is incessantly gnawing at us, so we would like to thank all you moms out there who refrain from using the one line we hate most, "I told you so."

As kids, mama's word was the Gospel truth, but during our rebellious adolescence we took it with a pinch of salt. Now, as we stand at the threshold of womanhood, we know that a couple of years down the line, we will be giving our kids the same advice. "Life turns a full circle."

While the world is gripped in football fever, those of you not too sporty can still catch the action. All you have to do is buy "ALLEZ! OLA! OLE! ", the music of the World Cup marketed by Sony for Rs. 100. In addition to all the exciting songs it has stuff about the singers, their nationalities and the teams. You might have to wade through relatively unknown songs, but it is well worth your time and money. Happy listening and VIVA LA FRANCE
