Finally seeing `Expressions' in print fills us with euphoria, a sense of achievement and an unparalleled pride. It is the culmination of endless nights and long, tiring weeks of effort _ a feat we would not have been able to achieve without the deluge of ideas that came in from the kids at SPEED (Speech and Personality Evolution through Education and Drama).

`Expressions' was conceived at one of our SPEED meetings _ it started out as a thought, an idea, a dream. It was our responsibility to make this dream a reality and use the experience to enrich our lives. We did our best and had fun doing it!!

Catering to the various age groups was difficult. We have tried to incorporate articles from different facets ranging from poetry to career planning, student views to reviews of plays, books etc. and of course drama _ our forte.

All suggestions that will help better this newsletter are welcome because free expression is what we are about.

My Knight in Shining Armour
The ugly frog turned into a handsome prince, got married to the princess and lived happily ever after.....
In all fairy tales, the ugly ducklings turn into beautiful swans, the grotesque frogs into charming princes, the humble old maids marry an heir to the throne and everyone lives happily ever after. Perhaps that's why, all through my childhood, I believed that a knight in shining armour would come riding into my life on a beautiful white horse, through a thorny forest and sweep me off my feet. However, by the time I neared my teens, I realized that that was not the way it actually worked. My innocent dreams were crushed when I discovered that love at first sight became extinct with Romeo and Juliet. The heartbreak was painful, but not for long. They say that if you look hard enough, you will find what you are looking for, so I began my search in earnest - the dreamy blue eyes, the soft sandy hair, strong muscular arms, that teasing smile, the great sense of humour and the charismatic personality. After looking for a long, long time, I have finally come to the conclusion that my knight has gotten hopelessly lost in the forest....

The Silent Visitor
A visitor was coming to our house,
But he would be as quiet as a mouse.
He would wear a red cap and have a
white beard,
This is what I heard.
    On Christmas Eve he came,
With his reindeer so tame.
He visited our fireplace,
With a benevolent smile on his face
And much to my joy,
He filled my stocking full of toys.
There were also candies sweet,
For all of us to eat.
I woke up with a start,
And a palpitating heart,
Then I said, “of course”, that must
have been Santa Claus.

In Retrospect

This quarter at SPEED, a theatre oriented institution, got our creative juices flowing. Ever heard of `IN MUMBAI'? Well they did a feature on SPEED and it's actvities.
Ruchi, one of our ex-students, a prominent T.V persona, brought Asha Harihasan, a make up artist, to SPEED. She got three of our students, Varun, Kavya and Amit to try their hand at face painting. Amit painted the sun in the form of a peace symbol because "we should spread the message of peace in the same way the sun exudes light and energy." Varun depicted nature, which he says, "is at the very root of all good things." Kavya added birds because she feels that, "nature is incomplete without birds." And of course, we must thank Ranjit for the use of his face.

Today’s expression : Smile!!
The adage goes “smile and the whole world smiles with you,” however, it would be a little unfair to inflict one of those tartar infested smiles upon the world and expect it to beam back! Unless you have the morbid fantasy to be nicknamed ‘dragon breath’, and have people holding their breath when they encounter you, Doctor’s orders are to brush your teeth, twice a day with a good fluoridated paste, paying special attention to the brushing technique. The to and fro sideways motion is an absolute no no. It’s the up down brush stroke that gives very good cleaning action.  It’s no point if the outsides are carefully cleaned while the insides are left for the bacteria to play havoc with! A short head brush with a flexible angle is ideal to reach the far recesses of your mouth. A yummy flavoured fluoridated paste gives double fayda because brushing ceases to be drudgery and the fluoride prevents caries. So make the brush and paste your life long friends and take your smile from mile to mile……
